One-step immunochromatographic test to detect total prostate specific antigen (t-PSA) in human serum.
The prostate specific antigen is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 34,000 daltons (in a free state). It has serine-protease-like enzymatic activity that plays a significant role in the processes of semen gelation and liquefaction.
It is useful for diagnosis because it is one of the few tumor markers whose detection above a specific concentration presents clinical utility in diagnosing prostate cancer, the second most important cancer in men and the most significant in those of advanced age.
